The Bosch sustainability strategy

Concrete objectives for all key topics

Bosch Healthcare Solutions GmbH (BHCS) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Robert Bosch GmbH. Accordingly, the same sustainability principles and guidelines apply to us as to our parent company. Our guiding principle is: By acting in an economically, environmentally, and socially responsible manner, we want to improve people’s quality of life and safeguard the livelihoods of present and future generations.

Bosch's sustainability strategy is centered around six focal points: climate action, water, circular economy, diversity, human rights and health. These topics are summarized in the target vision “New Dimensions — Sustainability 2025” and we are working consistently on their realization. The Bosch sustainability website reports transparently on targets, measures and performance.

Environmental and climate protection at BHCS

Energy and resource efficiency

BHCS is striving to optimize the consumption of energy and resources over the entire life cycle of products. A key role is also played by product design: disposable products are often unavoidable in medical technology for hygienic or technical reasons. However, the impact on the environment and climate can still be reduced. For example, we have cut the size of the Vivalytic test cartridge considerably: switching from the DxC9 to the DxC6 model has led to a significant reduction in the use of plastic and other raw materials. The new cartridge saves 23% of CO2 emissions compared to the old model.

CO2-neutral location

With over 400 locations worldwide, the Bosch Group has been carbon neutral overall since 2020 (GHG Protocol: Scopes 1 & 2).1 This is primarily achieved by increasing energy efficiency and using renewable energy from in-house generation and external procurement. Unavoidable CO₂ emissions2 are offset by carbon credits.3 The BHCS site in Waiblingen is also CO₂-neutral in this sense. Highly modern production processes, the use of 100% green electricity, and our own photovoltaic system all contribute to this.

Product carbon footprint

The carbon footprint of our products does not begin and end at the factory gate. In climate protection, raw material extraction, supply chain, use and disposal of the products also play an important role. We are continuously working on solutions to optimize the energy and resource consumption as well as the emissions of our products — for example by using fewer or more climate-friendly materials and with concepts for multiple use. At the same time, we have to meet the strict quality and hygiene standards of the medical technology industry and are not yet able to avoid all emissions. We therefore offset the remaining CO2 emissions from our Vivalytic and Vivatmo product lines with carbon credits. The emissions of the products are calculated over the entire life cycle according to recognized methods. An independent institute validates the calculations. Bosch then purchases emission certificates for the calculated quantity. The CO2 certificates are derived from climate protection projects that are certified according to international standards (Gold Standard / Verified Carbon Standard).

References and notes

1 Scopes 1, 2, and 3 are used according to the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard. Further information on the Bosch Group’s sustainability strategy can be found at sustainability.bosch.com.

2 In this text, we have taken into account the effects of both CO₂ as well as other greenhouse gases and climate-relevant substances, insofar as the latter are relevant for the analysis. For better readability, we use CO₂ synonymously with CO₂ equivalents.

3 Carbon credits are transferable permits that enable a reduction in emissions of CO2or other greenhouse gases made in one region to be exchanged for emissions made elsewhere.
